Google's iOS application is introducing a novel "Simplify" function, leveraging AI to enhance comprehension of intricate or specialised web content without requiring users to navigate away from the original page.
Simplify uses a clever way of improving prompts, created by Google Research. It uses Gemini to make difficult text easier to understand, while still keeping the important details. Google's tests showed that the simpler text helped users understand and remember the original information better.
By adding a feature like 'Simplify', Google probably wants people to keep using its tools and services when they need help with difficult topics, instead of using popular outside tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
To engage with Simplify, select any desired text while browsing within the Google application, subsequently activating the “Simplify” icon that materialises, presenting a more accessible iteration of the content, facilitating comprehension and uninterrupted perusal.
Google’s research blog provides an illustration of how this capability might appear.
This complex condition damages the lung tissue in two ways: through emphysema, which harms the air sacs, and through fibrosis, which causes widespread scarring. The immune cells in the lungs change, and the body produces more substances that regulate the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change significantly.
Google says the feature is meant to help people understand difficult topics they find when trying to learn new things online.
"Our objective necessitates models that can accurately paraphrase intricate concepts, avoiding the insertion of errors or the omission of essential information," stated Google in a blog post. "The revised text should facilitate the reader's comprehension of difficult content while upholding the fidelity of the source material."
Simplify is slated for deployment to iOS users this week.
