OpenAI expects to pay a smaller part of its money to its investor and partner, Microsoft, by 2030 than it does now, according to a report from The Information that mentioned financial papers.
This news comes after OpenAI recently changed its mind about a big plan to reorganize. Now, they have a new plan where their part that makes money will become a public benefit company, but it will still be controlled by their part that doesn't make money.
OpenAI currently has a deal to give 20% of its total income to Microsoft. However, The Information reported that the AI company has told investors it plans to give 10% of its income to its business partners, including Microsoft, by the end of 2030.
Microsoft has committed significant investment to OpenAI, and a current agreement extends until 2030, featuring a revenue-sharing arrangement between the entities. This pact also grants Microsoft access to OpenAI's intellectual property for its AI offerings and exclusive use of OpenAI's application programming interfaces on its Azure platform.
Bloomberg reported on Monday that Microsoft has not yet approved OpenAI's suggested company structure. Microsoft reportedly wants to make sure the new structure protects the large amount of money it has invested, which is billions of dollars.
OpenAI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment.
