Elon Musk said that Tesla plans to start a robot taxi service in Austin, Texas, on June 22.
Musk wrote on his X account that the date might change. He said Tesla is being very careful about safety.
People who invest, experts, and Tesla fans have been waiting for the driverless taxis. Musk said the service would begin in Austin in June.
Last month, Musk said the taxis will first be controlled by people from far away. They will only drive in safe parts of the city. He wants to start with about 10 taxis, then quickly add more. He plans to offer the service in Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, and other cities.
For ten years, Musk has been saying that Tesla's self-driving cars would be ready soon. Now, Tesla is starting a taxi service with these cars, so he feels more pressure. Tesla's car sales have gone down because there are more electric cars from other companies. Also, they are changing their most popular car, the Model Y, and Musk is now more involved in politics.
The Austin launch happened after Musk and President Trump had a big argument about taxes. Some experts are worried that Trump might try to make problems for the robotaxis. He could ask government safety groups to check them if there is any trouble.
