Elon Musk said that Tesla plans to start its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, around June 22, but this date might change.
Musk said on his social media platform, X, that the date could change because Tesla is being very careful about safety.
Investors, Wall Street analysts, and Tesla fans have been waiting for the self-driving taxis to be available since Musk said earlier this year that the service would start in Austin in June.
Last month, Musk told CNBC that the robotaxis will first be controlled from a distance and will only operate in specific safe areas of the city. He plans to start with about 10 taxis, quickly add more, and then offer the service in cities like Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco.
For ten years, Elon Musk has been promising that fully self-driving cars would be available "next year." Now, he is under a lot of pressure because Tesla is actually starting a self-driving taxi service. Sales of Tesla's electric cars have decreased because of more competition, updates to its popular Model Y car, and the impact of Musk's involvement in politics.
The launch in Austin happened after Musk had a public argument with President Trump about tax laws. Some experts are concerned that Trump might react by encouraging federal safety regulators to get involved if there are any problems with the robotaxis.
