A former delivery driver has admitted to working with others to steal over $2.5 million from DoorDash. They did this by making the company pay for deliveries that never actually happened, according to federal prosecutors.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri admitted guilt in a San Jose federal court on Tuesday to conspiring to commit wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, a 30-year-old from Newport Beach, California, has confessed to working with three accomplices to defraud a San Francisco delivery company in 2020 and 2021, according to federal prosecutors.
Prosecutors stated that Devagiri used customer accounts to make large orders. He then used an employee's login details to access DoorDash's system and change the orders to driver accounts that he and others controlled. Officials said that Devagiri then made these fake driver accounts report that the orders were delivered, even though they weren't, and tricked DoorDash's system into paying these accounts for deliveries that never happened.
Prosecutors stated that Devagiri then used the DoorDash system to switch orders from "delivered" back to "in process". He would then manually give these orders to driver accounts that he and others managed, starting the process over again.
Prosecutors stated that the employee, who is no longer with the company, admitted guilt in November 2023 for planning wire fraud and confirmed their involvement in the scam.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty for his involvement in the conspiracy. He could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and fined $250,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 16.
