On Tuesday, Google announced a new version of its main AI model, called Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition). Google says this new model performs better on many common tests.
You can use the Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) with the Gemini API and Google’s Vertex AI and AI Studio. It costs the same as the older Gemini 2.5 Pro model. It is also in Google's Gemini chatbot for websites and mobile phones.
This model is coming out before Google's yearly I/O meeting for developers, which is why it's called the "I/O edition." At this meeting, Google is expected to show many new models, as well as tools and systems that use AI. Google is trying very hard to be the most popular and successful company in the AI market. Other companies, like OpenAI and xAI, are also about to release new models that are expected to work very well.
Google says that Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is much better at coding and making interactive web apps. The company also says the model can now change code more easily to do a specific job, and it's better at fixing code.
In a blog post, Google said that their Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is the best on the WebDev Arena Leaderboard. This is a test that measures how well a model can make good-looking and useful web apps. Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is also very good at understanding videos. It got a score of 84.8% on a popular test called VideoMME.
Google wrote in a blog post that the new Gemini 2.5 Pro will help developers who already use it. It will make coding better and fix problems developers have talked about. For example, it will make fewer mistakes when calling functions and make function calling happen more often. Google also said the model naturally likes nice-looking web design but you can still control it.
