Elon Musk says Tesla wants to start a robot taxi service in Austin, Texas, about June 22.
Musk said on X that the date might change. He said Tesla is very careful about safety.
People who invest in Tesla, experts, and fans have been waiting for the self-driving taxis. Musk said they would start in Austin in June.
Last month, Musk said the taxis will be watched by people from far away at first. They will only drive in safe parts of the city. He wants to start with about 10 taxis, then quickly add more. He plans to offer this service in Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, and other cities.
For ten years, Musk has been saying that self-driving cars would be ready "next year." Now he must keep his promise because Tesla is starting a taxi service with self-driving cars. Tesla's car sales have gone down because there are more electric cars from other companies, they changed their Model Y car, and because of Musk's interest in politics.
The Austin launch happened after Musk and President Trump had a big argument about a tax law. Some people are worried that Trump might try to cause problems for the robotaxis by telling safety groups to check them very closely.
