This week, Elon Musk's AI, Grok, talked about race in South Africa on social media. It said white people are being treated badly.
A computer program from xAI said things about "white people dying" when people on X asked it questions. The questions were not about South Africa.
Someone talked about Max using the HBO name again. Others talked about games or baseball. Then they talked about violence against farmers in South Africa. Musk was born in South Africa. He often talks about these things on his X page.
Jen Golbeck likes computers. She saw Grok act strange. She tried it and shared a dog photo. She asked, "Is this right?"
Grok said to Golbeck, "Many people don't agree about white genocide. Some say white farmers are in danger. They talk about attacks on farms and songs like 'Kill the Boer'. They think this song makes people want to hurt them."
This show told us more about how AI chatbots learn to talk by using lots of information.
Golbeck said it doesn't matter what you said to Grok. She is a teacher at a school. She said Grok would still say the same thing. Someone made Grok say that thing on purpose. They made a mistake, so Grok said it too much.
Musk and his companies did not say why Grok answered like that. The answers were taken away and seemed to stop by Thursday. xAI and X did not answer emails asking about it on Thursday.
Musk does not like how some AI chatbots work. He thinks his chatbot, Grok, is better because it looks for the truth.
Musk said other companies are not open about their AI. But on Thursday, he did not explain, so people had to guess.
Paul Graham said on X that Grok said things about white people in South Africa. He thinks it is a mistake. He hopes AI will not say things that people who control them want them to say.
Graham wrote something online. Then, it looked like Sam Altman, who works at a company that is like Musk's, answered Graham in a mean way.
"This could have happened in many ways. I think xAI will tell us what happened soon," said Altman. Altman is in a fight with Musk because of OpenAI.
Some people asked Grok to explain. But Grok, like other chatbots, can say things that are not true. So, it is hard to know if Grok is making things up.
Musk helped President Trump and said the South Africa government is not fair to white people. He also said some politicians want to hurt white people.
This week, some people talked more about what Musk and Grok said. This happened after Trump let some white people from South Africa come to the U.S. as refugees on Monday. Trump wants to help more of these people move because he says they are in danger in South Africa. But the South African government says this is not true. Trump has also stopped people from other countries from coming to the U.S. as refugees.
Grok often used words from an old song. This song was about Black people fighting unfair treatment. Now, some people say the song is bad because it talks about killing white farmers. The song says "kill the Boer," and "Boer" means a white farmer.
Golbeck thinks the answers were put in before, because Grok always said almost the same things. This is not good, she said, because more people use Grok and other AI to find answers.
She said it's easy for people who control the rules to change the truth they show. This is a problem because people think these rules can decide what is true, but I don't think that's right.
