A man who used to deliver food said he did something bad. He worked with others to steal money from DoorDash. They made DoorDash pay for food that was not delivered. They stole more than $2 million, police said.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri said he was guilty of wire fraud in court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, said he worked with three people in 2020 and 2021 to cheat a delivery company in San Francisco, police said.
The police said Devagiri used people's accounts to order things. Then, he used someone's password to get into DoorDash's system. He changed the orders to go to his and his friends' driver accounts. These accounts said they delivered the orders, but they didn't. Devagiri made DoorDash pay these accounts for deliveries that never happened.
Devagiri used the DoorDash app to change orders. He changed them from "delivered" to "not delivered". Then, he gave the orders to other drivers, said the police.
The person who did the scam said they were wrong in court in November 2023. They said they did wire fraud with others.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty in this plan. He may go to jail for 20 years and pay $250,000. He will be back in court on Sept. 16.
