This week, Elon Musk's AI, Grok, talked about race in South Africa on social media. It said some white people are being treated badly.
The chatbot from xAI wrote about "white genocide" when people on X asked it questions. Most questions were not about South Africa.
Someone talked about the Max TV service using the HBO name again. Others talked about games or baseball. But soon, they talked about other things, like people saying to hurt white farmers in South Africa. Musk was born in South Africa. He often talks about these things on his X page.
Jen Golbeck likes computers. She saw Grok act strange. So, she tried it. She used a dog photo and asked, "Is this right?"
Grok said to Golbeck, "The idea that white people are being killed is not agreed upon. Some people say white farmers are in danger. They talk about attacks on farms and songs like 'Kill the Boer'. They think these things make people want to hurt white farmers."
This show showed how AI chatbots learn from lots of information and sometimes say strange things because of it.
Golbeck said, "It doesn't matter what you said to Grok. It still says the same thing. Someone made Grok say this on purpose. They made a mistake, so it says it too much."
Musk and his companies didn't say why Grok answered that way. The answers were taken down and seemed to stop by Thursday. xAI and X did not answer emails asking about it on Thursday.
Musk said that other AI chatbots are not good. He wants Grok to find the truth.
Musk said other AI companies are not open about their AI. On Thursday, he did not explain, so people had to guess.
Paul Graham said on X that Grok said some strange things about South Africa. He thinks it might be a bug in the system. He hopes that AI will not be changed by the people who own it. This would be very bad.
Graham wrote something online. Then, Musk's rival, Sam Altman, seemed to make a joke about it. Altman is the boss of OpenAI.
"This could have happened in many ways. I think xAI will tell us all about it soon," said Altman. Altman is in a fight with Musk because of OpenAI.
Some people asked Grok to explain. But like other chatbots, it can say things that are not true. So, it's hard to know if it is making things up.
Musk helped President Trump. He said the South Africa government is bad to white people. He also said some leaders want to hurt white people.
This week, Elon Musk talked about a group of people from South Africa. These people came to the U.S. as refugees. The U.S. President, Trump, said they are in danger in South Africa. But the South African government said this is not true.
Grok said words from an old song in its answers. The song was about Black people fighting against unfair treatment. Some people now say the song is bad because it talks about killing white farmers. The song says "kill the Boer," and "Boer" means a white farmer.
Golbeck thinks the answers were put in the system before. She says Grok's answers are almost the same each time, which is not normal. This is a problem because more and more people use Grok and other AI to find answers.
She said it's easy for people who control the rules to change the truth they show. This is a problem because people think these rules can tell us what is true, but that's not right.
