A man who used to deliver food said he did something wrong. He worked with others to take money from DoorDash. They made DoorDash pay for food that was not delivered. They took more than $2 million, say the police.
Sayee Devagiri said he was guilty of a crime in court, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, said he worked with three people in 2020 and 2021 to trick a delivery company in San Francisco, police said.
The police said Devagiri used people's accounts to order things. Then, he used a worker's login to change the orders to accounts he controlled. He made it look like the orders were delivered, but they weren't. He changed the system to pay these fake accounts for deliveries that never happened.
Devagiri used DoorDash on his computer. He changed orders to say "not done" and gave them to his friends. Then they did the orders again, police said.
The person who did the scam said they were wrong in court in November 2023. They said they helped plan the scam, police said.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty in this plan. He may have to stay in prison for 20 years and pay $250,000. He will be back in court on Sept. 16.
