OpenAI expects to pay a smaller part of its income to its investor and partner Microsoft by 2030 than it does now, according to The Information, which saw financial papers.
This news follows OpenAI's recent change from a big restructuring plan to a new approach where its part that makes money will become a public benefit corporation (PBC), but will still be controlled by its part that doesn't make money.
The Information reported that OpenAI currently has a deal to give 20% of its total income to Microsoft. However, the AI company has informed investors that it plans to share only 10% of its income with its business partners, including Microsoft, by the end of 2030.
Microsoft has committed substantial financial resources, reportedly tens of billions, to OpenAI. Their current agreement, in effect until 2030, incorporates a reciprocal arrangement for revenue sharing. Furthermore, this partnership grants Microsoft the entitlement to integrate OpenAI's intellectual property into its artificial intelligence offerings and secures exclusive access to OpenAI's APIs on the Azure platform.
According to a Bloomberg report on Monday, Microsoft has not yet endorsed OpenAI's intended corporate framework, apparently seeking assurances that the structure safeguards its considerable multi-billion-dollar investment.
OpenAI and Microsoft were not immediately available to provide a statement.
