Some people say TikTok is making our attention spans shorter. But, people all over the world are watching a boring live stream from a Swedish TV station they likely don't know. This is because it's time for the Great Moose Migration.
For millennia, moose have undertaken their annual spring migration across the Ångerman River, journeying towards a more temperate summer habitat. However, since 2019, this three-week spectacle has been globally accessible, with Sweden's SVT broadcaster offering a livestream of the migration online, utilizing over 30 cameras to capture the entirety of the deliberately paced progression.
Most of the time, the livestream shows peaceful views of forests and rivers. If you are lucky, you might see a moose walking by. The moose doesn't know it is famous around the world. It is just a moose, walking slowly and not worrying about anything.
Typically, the stream offers little sound, though occasionally one perceives the rush of the wind or the calls of birds, a pleasant experience even when one forgets the livestream is active and is startled by the sudden sounds of distant creatures.
As one Swedish student confided to the AP: "I feel relaxed, yet simultaneously apprehensive; contemplating, 'Oh, there's a moose. What if there's a moose? I'm unable to attend to basic necessities!'"
However, even a strange-looking moose sighting is still a moose sighting.
The SVT moose stream captivated 9 million viewers last year, a notable figure when juxtaposed with the Discovery Channel's Shark Week, which attracted over 22 million viewers in 2023; for a nature stream produced by a modest team of fifteen, this comparison is remarkably strong.
What renders this type of livestream so captivating is its stark contrast to our typical online exposure. Your TikTok feed presents you with concise videos so precisely curated to your interests that disengagement becomes challenging. Similarly, YouTubers painstakingly refine their videos to sustain our attention for the maximum duration.
However, the moose have no expectations of us; indeed, they appear unaware of our presence, despite our enthusiastic support.
