TikTok is improving its search feature, and now you can see reviews for some places directly in the comments of a video. This new feature seems to be a test and means you don't have to search again or go to Google when you find a place on TikTok and want more information.
TikTok users with access to this novel feature will observe a new "Reviews" tab on the right subsequent to clicking to access the video's comments.
For example, encountering a video featuring Central Park in New York City that includes a location tag allows you to view users' star ratings, their textual reviews, and any photographic contributions.
In this section, you can also access a reviewer's TikTok profile by clicking on their username, setting it apart from a previous Google Maps integration marked by a distinctive Google Maps icon.
While the new feature might be a welcome addition for some, others may perceive it as cluttering the user experience when viewing content.
This initiative represents TikTok's latest strategy to broaden its search capabilities and compete with Google.
In 2022, a Google executive posited that TikTok was encroaching upon its principal services, Search and Maps, notably among younger demographics, and presently, TikTok has contested Google's supremacy across various domains.
Beyond its status as a popular platform for location searches among Gen Z, TikTok introduced image search functionalities last year enabling users to capture or upload photographs to locate comparable products within TikTok Shop.
As of September 2024, TikTok commenced offering advertisers the capability to target its search results page via "TikTok Search Ads Campaigns," a keyword-driven search solution crafted to exhibit brands' advertisements within search outcomes.
It remains uncertain whether TikTok intends to implement its reviews tab on a larger scale, as the company chose not to comment prior to publication; however, during TechCrunch's testing, the feature only appeared on a selection of videos with a location tag.
