Google’s iOS application is introducing a new “Simplify” function that utilises artificial intelligence to enhance the comprehensibility of intricate or technical web content, entirely within the confines of the webpage.

Simplify employs a sophisticated prompt refinement strategy pioneered by Google Research, leveraging Gemini to render intricate content more accessible without sacrificing vital information. Google's evaluations indicate that the simplified text enhances users' comprehension and retention of the source material.

By providing a native function such as Simplify, Google probably aims to retain users within its suite of tools and services for assistance with intricate subjects, instead of them resorting to prevalent external applications like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Simplify can be accessed by selecting text on a webpage within the Google app and subsequently tapping the displayed "Simplify" icon, presenting a condensed version to facilitate comprehension and continued reading.

Google's research blog shows an example of what this feature could look like. For instance, you might see a paragraph that says: "This condition is complicated and damages the lungs in several ways, including destroying lung tissue, causing scarring, changing the types of immune cells in the lungs, increasing the production of substances that affect the immune system, and significantly changing the blood vessels in the lungs."

This complex condition involves damage to the lung tissue from emphysema, a disease that damages the air sacs in the lungs, and widespread scarring of the lung tissue, called fibrosis. The immune cells in the lungs change, and the body makes more substances that control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change a lot.

Google says the feature is meant to help people understand difficult subjects they find when they are trying to learn new things online.

Google said in a blog post that their aim is for models to accurately rephrase difficult ideas, making sure not to add mistakes or leave out important details. The rewritten text should help people understand hard topics better while keeping the original information correct.

Simplify is poised to commence its rollout to iOS users this week.
