On Tuesday, Google announced a new version of their main AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro. They say it does better than other models on popular tests.
You can use Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) with the Gemini API and on Google's Vertex AI and AI Studio platforms. It costs the same as the Gemini 2.5 Pro model it replaces. You can also find it in Google's Gemini app for websites and mobile phones.
Google is releasing a new model just before its main yearly meeting for developers, called I/O. This is why the model is called the "I/O edition." At the meeting, Google plans to show many new models, along with tools and systems that use AI. Google is trying very hard to get people to notice and use its AI products because the competition in the AI industry is very tough. Other companies, like OpenAI and xAI, are also about to release new models that are expected to work very well.
Google says Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is much better at coding and making interactive web apps. The company also says the model is better at changing code to do a specific thing and editing code.
In a blog post, Google says that Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is number one on the WebDev Arena Leaderboard. This is a test that checks how well a model can make attractive and useful web apps. Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is also excellent at understanding videos, scoring 84.8% on VideoMME, a well-known test.
Google said in a blog post that for developers who use Gemini 2.5 Pro, the new version will make coding better and fix problems they have mentioned. This means function calling will be more correct and happen more often. The model usually likes nice-looking web design, but you can still control it.
