Some people say TikTok is making our attention spans shorter. But, surprisingly, many people around the world are watching a live stream that is quite boring, from a Swedish TV station they probably don't know. It's the time for the Great Moose Migration.

Every spring for thousands of years, moose have crossed the Ångerman River to find a warmer place for the summer. But since 2019, people everywhere can watch this for three weeks online. A Swedish TV channel uses more than 30 cameras to show the moose slowly moving across the river.

Usually, the live video shows peaceful forest and river scenes. If you're lucky, you might see a moose walking by, completely unaware that many people around the world know about it. It's just a moose, walking slowly without worrying about anything.

Usually, the stream is almost silent. At other moments, you can hear the wind blow strongly and the birds singing. It feels pleasant, even if you forget you kept the livestream open on your computer and are surprised by a group of birds from far away.

As one Swedish student told the AP news agency: "I feel relaxed, but at the same time I think, 'Oh, there's a moose. What if there's a moose? I can't go to the toilet!'"

The live stream continues all night, using night vision cameras so we don't miss any moose action. But the clear black and white picture looks more like 'The Blair Witch Project' than a nature show. Still, seeing a slightly strange moose is still seeing a moose.

Last year, 9 million people watched SVT's live stream of moose. To compare, Discovery Channel's Shark Week had over 22 million viewers in 2023. This is impressive because SVT only shows nature live and has just 15 staff members.

What makes this type of livestream so interesting is that it is very different from what we usually see online. On TikTok, you see short videos that are made specially for you, so it's difficult to stop watching. YouTubers carefully edit their videos to keep us interested for as long as possible.

However, the moose don't need anything from us. They probably don't even realize we are here watching them.
