Amazon says it has made a new robot for its warehouses, named Vulcan, that can 'feel' some of the things it touches.
The two-armed Vulcan robot, which can move items in Amazon's storage areas, uses special sensors to feel when it touches something. One arm moves things around, and the other arm, which has a camera and a tool to pick things up, grabs the items.
Amazon says the robot, named Vulcan, learned from real information, like how much force to use and how things feel, to choose about 75% of Amazon's products. They also say it can learn and improve by itself over time. The robot is now being used in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany. So far, it has processed 500,000 orders there.
Vulcan is one of Amazon’s newest warehouse robots, joining hundreds of thousands used to process customer orders worldwide. Although some people claim Amazon uses robots to replace workers, Amazon says robots like Vulcan just make warehouses safer.
