College basketball's new season opened Monday.
The situation is new.
Many players across the country played.
They won court orders against the NCAA's new rules.
Some teams got good fifth-year players back.
Some of them played in the NBA summer league.
Other teams had to fill gaps.
Players they counted on lost in court.
Most lawsuits target the NCAA's new five-year rule.
It gives athletes five seasons to play.
The five seasons must be within a five-year period.
The period starts when they turn 19.
It also starts when they finish high school.
The earlier one counts.
The rule did not apply to the high school class of 2022.
They were finishing four seasons when the rule was adopted this year.
Many of those players went to court.
They asked for a fifth season.
Judges in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and other states granted injunctions in most cases.
The players can play for now.
Last week, the NCAA reported about 200 lawsuits since June.
The lawsuits cover 850 plaintiffs in many sports.
Of those, 362 men's and 62 women's basketball players were involved.
Nearly half got some help from judges.
That is 171 men and 30 women.
They can play.
On Friday, the NCAA lost an emergency request.
A Kentucky Court of Appeals judge denied it.
That left 30 athletes eligible.
A day earlier, the Ohio Supreme Court kept a ruling in place.
The ruling lets two dozen players stay available.
Not every ruling helped the athletes.
RJ Godfrey plays for Arizona.
He left a Georgia case and joined a Texas lawsuit.
But a judge there said he would not give temporary restraining orders.
He said this for players who sought help in other states.
Godfrey sat out Monday's game against UCLA.
Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said the players did nothing wrong.
He said they are missing a life-changing chance.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer said he expects cases to continue into the season.
He said some players can play for a time and then cannot.
Kansas coach Bill Self said his team is hopeful.
But he said the situation is a concern.
