Myles Garrett admitted his knee injury is more serious than he had suggested.
The star pass rusher made no tackles in his Rams debut on Friday.
The Rams lost 27-7 to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia.
Garrett missed much of training camp and recent practices to rest his knee.
He and the Rams had not said he might play below his best.
After the game, he said it was the worst version of himself.
He said he must recover and return to the player he knows he can be.
He would not discuss his knee or say which one is injured.
Garrett's quiet game was one of many problems for the Rams' revamped defense.
Trent McDuffie played well, but Jaylen Watson gave up a touchdown to Mike Evans.
The 49ers scored the final 24 points.
The Rams' offense also struggled in the 20-point loss, their largest since November 2024.
The Rams are the first team to open a season with the reigning NFL MVP and AP Defensive Player of the Year.
Matthew Stafford went 15 of 25 for 155 yards and an interception, with no touchdown passes.
He said he was disappointed and that the team must clean things up.
Aaron Donald, who stayed home from Australia, may return next Monday against the New York Giants.
Garrett said the team knew it would face adversity and must show resilience.
