On Monday morning, team owner John Fisher stood in front of a large group at the site of the new Athletics stadium. Behind him were piles of dirt and construction vehicles, and the exact spot for home plate. He told everyone, "We are Vegas' team."
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, local government officials, former Athletics stars like Rollie Fingers and Dave Stewart, and young baseball players were present. The team celebrated the start of construction on a new $1.75 billion stadium. This stadium will hold 33,000 people and is expected to be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have agreed to give up to $380 million in public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said he was sure the project would be done by 2028, and that the local workers were ready to start right away.
It's good to see the positive results from today and think about what the next three years will mean for the community and the building project. This will create new jobs and other good things as the building starts to go up, maybe even tonight.
Badain had a similar experience when he worked for the NFL's Raiders. He was very important in their move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped get approval and build the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium.
Before Allegiant Stadium was finished, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three seasons, sharing their stadium with the A's. The Raiders kept a strong connection with the Bay Area, even though they were leaving. However, A's fans were very angry about their team's upcoming move and how it was managed.
This situation made it impossible for the team to stay in Oakland, and they played their last season in the old stadium last year. The A's are now playing for at least three years in a smaller stadium in West Sacramento, California, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher explained that as a local team, they wanted to get young fans interested. He believed that if children liked the team, their parents would also become interested. He added that getting fans happens quickly, but building a winning team takes much more time and effort.
We want to keep improving what we have. Building a team is like building anything else; it can take more time than you expect. We believe we have the right parts to be very successful.
Bally's plans to build the stadium on nine acres of their 35-acre property, located at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The Tropicana hotel towers were taken down overnight in October to make room for the new baseball field.
The A's baseball team is trying to do well in their temporary home while also getting ready for their future. Each player has a patch of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is part of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved the lease, an agreement not to move, and development plans. These were the last important steps for the Athletics team to become Las Vegas's team.
The stadium's design, with its five overlapping levels, looks a lot like Australia's famous Sydney Opera House. A big glass window behind the outfield makes it feel like you're outside and offers views of the Las Vegas Strip. Instead of one main cooling system, the air conditioning will be sent through the seats.
This will be MLB's smallest stadium. For example, Tropicana Field, where the Tampa Bay Rays play, can hold 25,000 people when the top sections are closed. However, it usually has almost 40,000 seats.
Like the Oakland A's, the Tampa Bay Rays are playing in a smaller stadium this year because Hurricane Milton damaged their usual covered stadium. The Rays don't know where they will play in the future, and the team might get new owners soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field, which can now hold 34,830 people. This is fewer than the 43,345 seats it had when it opened in 1994.
The Oakland A's baseball team is planning to move to Las Vegas. They will be the fourth main professional sports team there, joining the Raiders, the Golden Knights, and the Aces.
Manfred said that the population, the success of other sports, and the amount of tourism make this a great place for them. He added that he is sure the team will be very successful in Las Vegas.
