Transgender athlete AB Hernandez won gold medals in the girls' high jump and triple jump at the California high school track and field championship. This caused a lot of discussion and got attention across the country. Hernandez was able to compete because of a new rule in California that allowed an extra girl to participate and win a medal in events where Hernandez had qualified. Even though Hernandez won, there were protests from people who do not agree with transgender athletes competing in women's sports. The California Interscholastic Federation made this new rule because of Hernandez's success and to follow California law. This law lets transgender students play on teams that match their gender identity. However, some critics say that the new rule just makes things more confusing. This debate is happening at a time when a recent survey shows that about 7 out of 10 adults in the US believe that transgender female athletes should not be allowed to compete in girls' and women's sports at any level.
