Transgender athlete AB Hernandez won gold medals in the girls' high jump and triple jump at the California high school championships, which led to a lot of discussion and national attention. Hernandez competed because of a new rule in California that allowed an extra girl to participate and win a medal in events where Hernandez had qualified. Even though she was successful, there were protests from people who are against transgender athletes competing in women's sports. The California Interscholastic Federation made this new rule because of Hernandez's success and to follow California law, which allows transgender students to play on teams that match their gender identity. However, some people say that this new rule just makes things more confusing. This debate is happening at a time when a recent survey shows that about 7 out of 10 adults in the US think that transgender female athletes should not be allowed to play in girls' and women's sports at any level.
