Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, or yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this important rank since 2017, as Mongolian competitors have mostly dominated the sport recently. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to sumo’s top rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The new champion comes from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was severely affected by a deadly earthquake and tsunami in 2024. Onosato has promised to use his new role to inspire and support the people in his home region. His promotion creates a rivalry with Hoshoryu, who was born in Mongolia and is the other current yokozuna. A tournament between them is planned for July in Nagoya.
