Non-French athletes at the French Open tennis tournament have complained about the unfriendly atmosphere when they play against French opponents, saying it is like a very intense football game. The crowd's aggressive behavior, including booing, whistling, and shouting insults, caused the tournament organizers to stop selling alcohol in the stands last year. Some athletes, like Nicolás Jarry from Chile, have called their experiences "disgusting" and the worst of their lives. Because of this negative crowd behavior, tournament director Amélie Mauresmo said that security has been increased and chair umpires have been given more authority to step in and report bad behavior. However, not all athletes are bothered by this unfriendly atmosphere. Belgian player Elise Mertens said it is a normal part of tennis. French player Corentin Moutet understood the pressure of playing at home and advised players to ignore it.
