Demonstrating remarkable resilience and strategic flexibility, Paris Saint-Germain successfully repelled repeated offensives from an energetic Arsenal side on Wednesday, ultimately prevailing 2-1 to secure their place in the Champions League final and maintain their pursuit of the coveted title.
Bereft of their typical ball possession, PSG appeared unsettled initially yet discovered solutions through counter-attacks and the crucial interventions of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to progress 3-1 on aggregate.
PSG advanced to the final of Europe's premier tournament for only the second time in the club's history – having been runner-up five years prior – achieving this milestone in the first season after the departure of superstar Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid.
The space left by Mbappé was not filled by another famous player. This was a big change for a club where, for more than ten years, the owners had spent a lot of money to attract big names like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
The club's innovative strategy enabled coach Luis Enrique to assemble a revitalised, formidable team exhibiting some of the finest football across Europe.
Enrique said, "From day one, I said our goal was to work hard enough to be able to make history, and that is still our goal." He added, "We want to be the first to win the trophy everyone has been waiting for." He explained, "This project has changed a lot since last year, and I feel very good coaching here because the president gives me the freedom and support to build the team we want. We can adapt to the market to create a team that gets better every day."
The French club will contend once more for its inaugural Champions League title when it confronts Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich.
PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi told CBS Sports that he strongly believes in the coach and the talented, young, and motivated players. He said they are deeply committed to the team, the jersey, the city, and the club.
With one fixture remaining, our undertaking is far from concluded.
Three-time European champions Inter triumphed over Barcelona with a 7-6 aggregate score in one of the competition's most memorable semifinals.
Having previously overcome Aston Villa and Liverpool before eliminating Arsenal, PSG, who had suffered defeat to Borussia Dortmund at this point in the competition last year, were ultimately vanquished by Bayern Munich in the final of 2020.
PSG managed to break the deadlock in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a set piece. Following the Arsenal defense's clearance of a free kick towards the edge of the area, the ball fortuitously rebounded into the path of Fabian Ruiz, who subsequently unleashed a spectacular half-volley into the net.
Achraf Hakimi executed a precise, curling strike in the seventy-second minute, extending the lead to two goals before Bukayo Saka netted a consolation for the Gunners.
Arsenal had encountered significant difficulties at the outset of the match in London last week, finding it challenging to contend with PSG's intensity in the midfield, and ultimately suffered a 1-0 defeat.
On this occasion, strengthened by the return of midfielder Thomas Partey, the Gunners launched 61 attacks, in contrast to PSG's 26.
The visiting team quickly showed they were in control. Declan Rice jumped high but missed his header, and then Gabriel Martinelli's shot was saved by Donnarumma.
Arsenal put a lot of pressure on PSG by attacking effectively on the sides of the field. They almost scored again in the eighth minute when Martin Ødegaard shot low from outside the penalty area, making Donnarumma make another good save.
PSG were compelled to rely on counterattacking opportunities, which were infrequent.
A scoring opportunity eventually emerged in the seventeenth minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, finding space on the left flank, cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed one of his characteristic, precisely angled shots that struck the post.
Paris Saint-Germain were subsequently unable to exploit a wayward pass by William Saliba, but Désiré Doué's ensuing shot proved lacklustre and directed squarely at Raya.
Shortly after the hour mark, Arsenal had another significant chance when Saka curled a precise shot that appeared destined for the top corner, only for Donnarumma to fully extend his body and parry the ball away.
Subsequently, Vitinha failed to convert a penalty following a VAR review that deemed Myles Lewis-Skelly had committed a handball; however, PSG quickly extended their advantage when Hakimi confidently struck the ball into the corner, assisted by substitute Ousmane Dembélé.
Arsenal maintained their offensive pressure until the final whistle and narrowed the gap via Saka in the 76th minute.
