Japan has announced its new sumo grand champion, Onosato. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this important rank since 2017. In recent years, most sumo champions have been from Mongolia. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to sumo’s top rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The new champion is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly damaged by an earthquake and tsunami in 2024. Onosato promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion means he will now have a rivalry with Hoshoryu, another yokozuna who was born in Mongolia. Their next tournament is in July in Nagoya.
