The Golden State Warriors plan to play their next three games against Minnesota without Stephen Curry, after tests on Wednesday showed the star player has a small injury in his left leg.
The Warriors announced that Curry would miss at least a week of play after his injury on Tuesday night. This injury happened early in the second quarter of Game 1, a game the Warriors won 99-88. Before leaving, Curry scored 13 points in 13 minutes. This helped Golden State get a good lead and gain an advantage by winning on the Timberwolves' home court.
“Every year in the playoffs, you have to adjust to things like the game plan, injuries, or who is playing, so we just need to adjust,” coach Steve Kerr said. “We’ve been in this situation before, and we are sure we can do well again.”
Game 2 is in Minneapolis on Thursday, and then the series goes to San Francisco for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 on Monday. Curry might return earliest for Game 5 on May 14, which is followed by three days off before Game 6 on May 18.
Curry has never had a serious hamstring problem before, so it's hard to know how long he will be away. It's also unclear if the Warriors can play well enough without the best 3-point shooter in NBA history until he can come back near the end of the series. But it's probably not a good idea for them to count on that happening.
Kerr stated, "We believe we have the best defense in the league, and this has been shown in recent months."
However, the current Golden State team is not as strong as the teams before, when Curry and Draymond Green were younger. Other important players like Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala were also key to their success. In 2018, they also had Kevin Durant.
At that time, the Warriors were pleased with the team effort from everyone, especially Jimmy Butler, Buddy Hield, and Green, in Game 1. In this game, Kerr used 12 different players.
Without Curry, Butler will have the ball most of the time, as he did on Tuesday. Butler, who joined the Warriors three months ago and helped them greatly in attack and defense, scored 20 points, took 11 rebounds, and made eight assists in the first game. He scored 20 or more points in four of the five games he played against Houston in the first round.
Everyone is playing hard, and everyone who comes into the game wants to make good plays," said Timberwolves guard Mike Conley. "So, you have to focus even more on the game, who you are playing against, and what they usually do. They are not just looking for Curry. Of course, Buddy and Jimmy will play harder, but they have players who can score, and they might try to do that together as a team.
