Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, or yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this top rank since 2017, as Mongolian competitors have mostly dominated the sport recently. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. He was promoted by the Japan Sumo Association after winning the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The new champion comes from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly affected by a serious earthquake and tsunami in 2024. Onosato has promised to use his new position to encourage and support the people in his home region. His promotion creates an exciting rivalry with Hoshoryu, who was born in Mongolia and is the other current yokozuna. They are scheduled to compete in a tournament in Nagoya in July.
