Non-French athletes at the French Open tennis tournament have complained about the unfriendly atmosphere when they play against French opponents, saying it is like a very intense football game. The crowd's aggressive behavior, which includes booing, whistling, and shouting insults, led the tournament organizers to stop selling alcohol in the stands last year. Some athletes, like Chile's Nicolás Jarry, have called their experiences "disgusting" and the worst of their lives. Because of the bad crowd behavior, tournament director Amélie Mauresmo said that security has been increased and chair umpires have been given more authority to step in and report bad behavior. However, not all athletes are bothered by this unfriendly atmosphere; Belgian player Elise Mertens said it is a normal part of tennis. French player Corentin Moutet admitted there is pressure when playing at home, advising players to ignore it.
