Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, also called yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to get this important title since 2017. In recent years, Mongolian wrestlers have mostly been the best in this sport. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to sumo's highest rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Onosato is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly damaged by an earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He has promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion creates a possible competition with Hoshoryu, the other current yokozuna, who is from Mongolia. They are scheduled to compete in a tournament in July in Nagoya.
