Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion (yokozuna), making him the first Japanese competitor to reach this high rank since 2017. For many years, Mongolian competitors have mostly dominated the sport. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. He was promoted to sumo's top rank by the Japan Sumo Association after winning the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The new champion comes from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly affected by a deadly earthquake and tsunami in 2024. Onosato promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion creates a rivalry with Hoshoryu, who was born in Mongolia and is the other current yokozuna. A tournament between them is planned for July in Nagoya.
