Paris Saint-Germain endured a relentless barrage of attacks and displayed exceptional adaptability on Wednesday, ultimately overcoming an inspired Arsenal 2-1 to advance to the Champions League final and earn another opportunity to claim the coveted title.
Lacking the ball possession it typically maintains, PSG appeared unsettled initially but discovered solutions by employing counter-attacks and relying on goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to progress with a 3-1 aggregate score.
PSG got to the final of Europe's main tournament for only the second time in their history. They were second five years before. They did this in the first season after their important player, Kylian Mbappé, left to join Real Madrid.
The big space left by Mbappé was not filled by another superstar. This was a big change for a club where the owners had spent a lot of money for more than ten years to get famous players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
The club's novel strategy enabled coach Luis Enrique to construct a revitalized, formidable team exhibiting some of the finest football in Europe.
Enrique said that from the beginning, their goal was to work hard enough to be able to make history, and that is still their goal. He said they want to be the first to win the trophy everyone has been waiting for. He explained that this project has developed since last year, and he feels very good as a coach because the president gives him the freedom and support to build the team they want. They can adjust to the market to create a team that gets better every day.
The French club will vie once more for its maiden Champions League title as it goes head-to-head with Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich.
"We place our trust in both our coach and our exceptionally gifted, youthful, and driven players," PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi conveyed to CBS Sports. "They demonstrate unwavering commitment to the team; they would sacrifice everything for the jersey – that is paramount – for the city, and for the club."
"With one fixture remaining, our task is far from complete."
Inter, a three-time European champion, overcame Barcelona with an aggregate score of 7-6 in a semifinal widely considered among the competition's most memorable.
Having overcome Aston Villa and Liverpool before prevailing against Arsenal, PSG, who were defeated by Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals last year and by Bayern Munich in the 2020 final, faced a similar challenge.
Paris Saint-Germain ended the stalemate in the 27th minute following a set piece, as the Arsenal defence headed a free kick towards the edge of the box; the ball rebounded into the trajectory of Fabian Ruiz, who struck an extraordinary half-volley into the goal.
Achraf Hakimi executed a precise, curled finish in the 72nd minute to extend the lead to 2-0, before Bukayo Saka reduced the deficit for the Gunners.
Arsenal experienced difficulties early in their match in London last week, finding it challenging to manage PSG's midfield intensity, and subsequently lost by a single goal.
This time, the Gunners, fortified by the return of midfielder Thomas Partey, mounted 61 attacks, in contrast to PSG's 26.
The visitors' ascendancy was swiftly rewarded, though Declan Rice's towering header narrowly missed its mark, and Gabriel Martinelli's subsequent attempt was thwarted by Donnarumma.
Arsenal's dominance on the wings proved decisive, and they threatened once more in the eighth minute when Martin Ødegaard's powerful low shot from beyond the box required another superb stop from Donnarumma.
PSG were largely confined to seeking opportunities on the counterattack, of which there were few.
The deadlock was broken in the seventeenth minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, finding space on the left, cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a characteristically precise shot that struck the post.
PSG subsequently failed to exploit a subpar pass from William Saliba, yet Désiré Doué could only manage a tepid shot directly at Raya.
Shortly after the hour mark, Arsenal fashioned another significant opportunity when Saka executed a finely judged curled shot that appeared destined for the top corner, only for Donnarumma to extend his frame and palm the ball clear.
Subsequently, Vitinha failed to convert a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a handball by Myles Lewis-Skelly. Nevertheless, PSG soon extended their advantage when Hakimi clinically struck the ball into the corner, assisted by the substitute Ousmane Dembélé.
Arsenal maintained their offensive pressure until the final whistle, with Saka reducing the deficit in the 76th minute.
