Japan has named Onosato as its newest sumo grand champion, or yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this high rank since 2017, as Mongolian competitors have mostly dominated the sport recently. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to this top rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Onosato comes from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly damaged by a major earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He has promised to use his new position to encourage and support the people in his home region. His promotion also sets up an exciting competition with Hoshoryu, who is from Mongolia and is the other current yokozuna. They are scheduled to compete in a tournament in Nagoya in July.
