Dan and Shay’s new album “Young” marks a shift from their usual wedding songs.

The lead single, “Say So,” is about suicide prevention.

It honors their late mentor, Ben Vaughn, who died by suicide a year earlier.

Dan Smyers said he was unsure if they should tackle the subject at first.

The song came together naturally in the studio.

Smyers said they owed it to Vaughn and to the community.

He also noted that they started work on the song on what would have been Vaughn’s 50th birthday.

He called that more than a coincidence.

The album is autobiographical and more emotionally open than their past work.

Smyers said men often do not share their feelings well, and he included himself in that.

The duo wrote and scrapped an entire album before settling on these 10 tracks.

The final collection includes more religious themes, such as the single “Her, The Kids and Jesus.”

Other songs cover grief and affection in different forms.

“Dogs in Our Twenties” is about a first pet.

“The Old Guys” features Cody Johnson and takes a twist on a love song.

Smyers said the two singers’ voices meet in the middle.

Mooney said the album has a song for everybody, whatever they are going through.
