President Donald Trump has spent 20 months promising an economic boom.
Friday’s positive jobs report, however, provoked frustration from him.
He complained about inflation and interest rates instead of celebrating the gain of 162,000 jobs in August.
He rejected the economic view that strong job growth can fuel inflation, saying, “Success does not cause inflation.”
Trump’s second term has seen slower hiring and higher prices.
The economy has grown at about 2% annually, which is slower than during the Biden administration.
Trump blames high interest rates on government debt for his failure to deliver faster growth.
He has threatened to stop trade with foreign countries as retaliation.
The national debt has passed $40 trillion, and the 10-year Treasury rate rose to 4.79% on Friday.
Trump’s own policies, including tariffs, have partly caused the inflation he blames on others.
His economic approval rating was only 32% in midsummer, down from 50% in 2018.
Economists say his credibility on growth and debt has suffered due to predictions that do not match reality.
Trump says lower interest rates could push GDP growth to “12, 13, 14, 15%.”
But cutting rates could worsen inflation.
White House officials insist their policies are working, pointing to AI and tariffs as future growth drivers.
Yet analysts warn that even strong growth may not reduce budget deficits, which are set to exceed $3 trillion a year within a decade.
