Canada is boosting its domestic defense industry as relations with the United States fray.
The push is visible inside a Toronto factory where workers sew helmet covers for the Canadian military.
The factory belongs to Wuxly, a luxury parka maker now entering defense contracting.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to strengthen economic self-sufficiency amid new US tariffs.
His defense strategy adds $60 billion in funding over five years.
It aims to reduce reliance on American suppliers and build domestic supply chains.
The plan could create 125,000 jobs and triple the defense industry's size over a decade.
Canadian firms are developing drones, robots, and Arctic sensors.
Wuxly has supplied Ukraine's military with 40,000 female uniforms.
New Frontier Robotics is building an AI-powered robot arm for military and civilian use.
Volatus Aerospace makes drones that can airdrop supplies or munitions.
Canada has also bought radar planes from Sweden's Saab and submarines from Germany's ThyssenKrupp.
Experts warn of challenges, including competition from larger US firms and political risks.
Still, defense shows are sold out, and new companies are joining the sector, said Wuxly founder James Yurichuk.
