Chinese authorities announced on Friday that Tesla and several Chinese carmakers are recalling more than 4 million vehicles.
The recalls are mostly over door handle safety issues.
Tesla is recalling about 2.98 million China-made and imported electric vehicles.
These include the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S.
Chinese media say this is the largest recall this year.
The regulator's notice said that in extreme situations, such as a severe collision causing electrical failure, the handles could stop people from opening doors to escape.
They could also prevent rescuers from getting in.
Tesla will perform software updates to reduce the risks, the notice said.
Xiaomi is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles.
Leapmotor is recalling over 370,000 cars.
Geely and XPENG are also recalling some vehicles.
The reasons were similar, mostly related to door handle problems.
The recalls follow China's February announcement that it will ban hidden car door handles starting next year.
These flush handles are common on Tesla and many Chinese EV models.
The official People's Daily newspaper said the large-scale recall serves as a safety upgrade before the 2027 ban.
It added that competition in the new energy vehicle industry should be defined by safety standards, not just the pace of innovation.
