In the US, sales in shops went down by 0.9% in May. They also went down a little in April, according to the Commerce Department. This happened because fewer people bought cars. Car sales were high in March because people wanted to buy before new taxes on imported cars started. People are not feeling as confident about spending money, but prices are staying steady and many people have jobs. This might mean people will still buy things in the next few months. If you don't count things like petrol, cars, and eating out, sales went up a little last month. This shows people are still buying some things they don't need. Some shops sold less, but online shops, clothes shops, and furniture shops sold more. The fall in sales may be because people are worried about higher prices because of new taxes.
