Many states are suing 23andMe because they don't want the company to sell people's DNA information without their permission. This lawsuit started because another company wants to buy 23andMe, which is having money problems. The states believe that personal information, like DNA and health records, should only be sold if each person gives clear permission. 23andMe started in 2006 and helps people learn about their family history using a spit test. But the company has not made much money since 2021, and they recently fired many employees. The company that wants to buy 23andMe for $256 million has promised to follow privacy rules. Also, an independent person will check if this sale is good for the customers' privacy.
