In June, consumer confidence rose for the first time in six months, showing a more positive view of the economy. This was because inflation stayed stable and the Trump administration made a temporary trade agreement with China. A first report from the University of Michigan's consumer confidence index showed a 16% increase, from 52.2 to 60.5. However, this was still 20% lower than in December 2024. This rise happened after President Trump decided to delay new taxes on goods from about 60 countries and reached a temporary agreement with China. This helped to reduce some of the economic worries caused by the long trade war. Even with these good changes, U.S. taxes on imported goods are still high compared to past levels and are expected to affect the economy more in the next few months. Consumer confidence is also still divided by politics, with Republicans trusting the economy more under Trump than Democrats. But this month, confidence increased overall among supporters of both parties and independent voters. The Federal Reserve will probably see the drop in what consumers expect about inflation as a good sign in their next meeting.
