Consumer confidence in the US improved in May, as reported by the Conference Board, after five months of decline. The index increased by 12.3 points to 98, rising from 85.7 in April, which was its lowest point since the pandemic began. This improvement seems mainly because concerns about the economic effects of President Trump's tariffs lessened slightly. However, short-term expectations for income, business conditions, and the job market stayed below 80, which could indicate an upcoming recession. Although 177,000 jobs were added in April, helping to boost confidence, worries about tariffs and inflation were still prominent in the survey responses. Despite these concerns, plans for increased spending on homes, cars, and vacations were observed.
