More than a week after flash floods killed hundreds along the China-Nepal border, little is known about the victims on the Chinese side.
The disaster has killed over 1,000 people and left more than 4,500 missing across both countries.
China has updated its death toll only a few times, and access to the area has been limited to top state media.
China’s state outlets have avoided showing the names or faces of the missing and their relatives.
Instead, they have broadcast videos of aid delivery and rescue efforts.
At least 10 people in China have been detained or fined for social media posts that questioned the official story.
The Nepalese side has been very different.
Officials there have regularly updated lists of the dead and missing.
Journalists have documented the disaster, and grieving families have been made visible.
Nepal has also allowed both domestic and foreign reporters to visit disaster sites.
China’s information control is especially tight in Tibet, where communications are heavily monitored.
Chinese journalists have been told not to interview family members of the dead or missing, according to Human Rights Watch.
Some relatives have spoken through independent channels outside China, such as exiled media or social media accounts, hoping to find information about their loved ones.
