Rescue teams with search dogs kept looking through mud, rocks and debris on Tuesday near the Nepal-China border.

They were searching for thousands of people still missing after flash floods.

Nepal’s disaster agency said 1,003 deaths had been counted there.

It also said 3,916 people were missing, including 583 foreign nationals.

China reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, including 261 foreigners.

The scale of the Aug. 26 disaster is slowing rescue efforts in both countries.

Landslides and destroyed roads have cut off remote areas.

Rescuers are racing to reach hundreds of workers believed trapped inside tunnels at hydropower projects in Nepal.

About 900 workers are missing from 12 projects.

Roughly 500 are believed to be trapped in tunnels, according to local authorities.

In Kathmandu, police buried dozens of bodies in trenches next to a forested area.

Authorities are using temporary graves until bodies can be identified.

They are preserving DNA samples, photographing facial features and assigning each body a reference number.

At least 11,814 people have been rescued so far, according to Nepalese authorities.

The disaster began when a glacial collapse sent rock, ice and meltwater into valleys.

This triggered powerful floods.

Scientists said the rockfall registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah said the disaster showed that risks in the Himalayan region are increasing with climate change.

He said it is time to raise the issue strongly before the international community.
