Peru is still counting votes Sunday night. The vote is for its ninth president in 10 years.
Electoral authorities say Keiko Fujimori leads. She is a conservative politician. Roberto Sánchez is behind her. He is a nationalist congressman. They have counted 58% of ballots.
The result is expected to be close. People may not know for days.
Fujimori has 5.96 million votes. That is 52.6%. Sánchez has 5.36 million votes. That is 47.4%.
Voting centers open and close without major trouble. This is unlike the first round.
Turnout in Lima seems lower than before. Voting is still mandatory.
Crime is the main worry for many voters. Extortion is a big part of it. A 2025 state survey finds a high fear. It says 84% of urban people fear crime victims in the next 12 months.
Experts say organized crime grows stronger. They say illegal gold mining brings it money.
Fujimori is the daughter of Alberto Fujimori. He is a former president. She campaigns on a hard anti-crime plan.
Sánchez is an ally of Pedro Castillo. Pedro Castillo is a jailed former president. Sánchez promises police reform. He also promises military help for security.
The winner will be sworn in on July 28. The term lasts five years.
