President Donald Trump is facing worry from friends and enemies over the Iran war. He said it would be short, but it has now slowed down. U.S. and Iranian negotiators made a plan to extend the ceasefire by 60 days and start new talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Trump has asked for changes, and Iran has not agreed.
There have been new strikes by the U.S. and Iran this week, and people fear the ceasefire may fail. Trump said the fighting is in “a different part of the world” and played down the danger. He also said a deal could come “over the weekend.” But there is still no new deal, and oil prices stay high.
Some people in Trump’s team and among his allies think he is in a hard place. Democrats say the war is hurting Americans because prices are high. Some Republicans, Pentagon officials, and Gulf allies do not want Trump to start bombing again. They say the U.S. has used many weapons and needs time to replace them.
Trump does not want a deal like the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said there is no worry inside the administration. Israel and hawkish allies want Trump to put more pressure on Iran, but Trump told Israel to stop its attack. Democrats in Congress are using the war against him before the November midterm elections.
