Across Gaza’s huge tent camps, many moved Palestinians have no real toilets. Families dig their own pits. Many relatives share them. In some camps, men, women, and children wait for shared toilets. They use them behind thin screens. Women also fear these toilets at night.

The lack of clean waste care causes a big health problem. Sewage smells spread through crowded tents. Dirty water pools near shelters. Rights groups say more than 80% of Gaza’s sewage pumps fail. They say this happened during Israel’s bombardment and attacks over the past 2 ½ years.

Mostafa Shaaban lives in a tent camp in Khan Younis. He fled Rafah. He built a simple toilet inside his family’s tent. He said he did not want his wife and children using public toilets. He said it felt humiliating. His wife, Iman Mansour, is pregnant with their third child. She said a clean toilet is a basic right.

Aid groups try small projects for family toilets. But supplies are limited. Rebuilding in Gaza is still uncertain. Little building gear has entered despite the ceasefire deal. Even a basic pit toilet costs a lot. Many families use buckets, chairs, or holes in the ground. Khaled Kollab also lives in Khan Younis. He said his simple tent toilet brought humiliation and shame.
