Israel and Iran agreed on Tuesday to a ceasefire plan suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump, ending their 12-day war that affected the Middle East. This agreement happened after Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar as a response. Both countries accepted the deal after Iran fired a final set of missiles at Israel, which killed at least five people early on Tuesday. At the same time, Israel carried out many airstrikes targeting places across Iran before morning.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, with Trump's help. Netanyahu told Israel's security cabinet on Monday night that Israel had reached all its goals in the 12-day operation against Iran. These goals included getting rid of the threat from Iran's nuclear and missile programs. He also said that Israel had damaged Iran's military leaders and several government places, and had taken control of Tehran's skies. Netanyahu warned, "Israel will respond strongly if the ceasefire is broken."
Israel launched strong attacks on Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. After that, Iran fired its own missiles, making Israelis rush into bomb shelters as the sun came up. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services reported that at least five people died and eight were injured. Iranian missiles killed five people in Israel. Police stated that Iran's attacks damaged at least three apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency workers found five bodies in one building and are still looking for more. At least 20 people were injured. The streets were covered with burned cars, broken glass, and rubble. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to search for anyone still trapped in the buildings. Police also said that some people were injured even inside their reinforced safe rooms. These rooms are designed to protect against rockets but not direct hits from missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was hit just before Trump announced a ceasefire. He stated that Israel and Iran had agreed to a complete ceasefire. This occurred after Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. Iran did this to retaliate for the U.S. bombing its nuclear sites. Iran warned the U.S. beforehand, so there were no casualties. Trump announced on Truth Social that the ceasefire, starting around midnight Washington time, would officially end the war. He called this conflict the "12 Day War." This name is similar to the 1967 Middle East war, known as the "Six Day War," where Israel fought against several Arab countries. Trump's statement has emotional significance for the Arab world, especially Palestinians.
In the 1967 war, Israel took the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that Trump talked directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff talked with the Iranians in direct and indirect ways. The White House said that the bombing on Saturday helped the Israelis agree to the ceasefire, and that the Qatari government helped to arrange the deal. It is not clear what part Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, played in the talks. He had said earlier on social media that he would not give up.
Officials said that Iran's missile attacks made them close the country's airspace for important flights for several hours. Israeli news reported that some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea. Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, but a few emergency flights have begun arriving and leaving recently. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight tracking data showed commercial planes flying in Qatari airspace once more, which meant Doha thought the danger to the country was over.
Many people have died in the conflict. In Israel, at least 29 people have been killed and over 1,000 injured. Israeli attacks on Iran have killed at least 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to the Human Rights Activists group. This group has given detailed numbers of deaths and injuries from problems in Iran, like the protests after Mahsa Amini died in 2022. They said that among those killed, 387 were civilians and 268 were security personnel. The U.S. has helped about 250 American citizens and their close family members leave Israel. They used government, military, and private planes that started flying over the weekend, according to a State Department official. It is thought that about 700,000 American citizens, most of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
