Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire plan put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump, aiming to end their 12-day conflict that has caused instability in the Middle East. This agreement came after Tehran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar, followed by a final series of missiles aimed at Israel, which killed several people. At the same time, Israel carried out many airstrikes across Iran in the early morning.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, coordinated with the Trump administration. He reported to Israel's security cabinet on Monday evening that Israel had achieved all its goals in the 12-day operation against Iran. These goals included eliminating the threat from Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, weakening Iran's military leadership, damaging several government sites, and gaining control of Tehran's skies. Netanyahu added that Israel would respond strongly to any violation of the ceasefire.
Israel carried out continuous airstrikes on Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. Following this, Iran launched missiles, which made Israelis go into bomb shelters as the sun rose. These attacks resulted in at least five deaths and eight injuries, as reported by Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue services. Iranian missiles also caused damage to at least three crowded apartment buildings in Beersheba, according to police. Emergency teams discovered five bodies in one building and are still searching for more. At least 20 people were hurt. The streets were filled with burnt cars, broken glass, and debris. Hundreds of emergency personnel gathered to look for anyone still trapped. Police stated that some individuals were injured even inside their reinforced safe rooms, which are built to protect against rockets and shrapnel, but not direct impacts from ballistic missiles.
A direct hit happened in the biggest city in southern Israel just before Trump announced a ceasefire. This announcement followed Iran's limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar, which was in response to America bombing its nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. beforehand, and no one was hurt. Trump said on Truth Social that the ceasefire, starting around midnight Washington time, would officially end the war. Trump called this conflict the "12 Day War," which reminds people of the 1967 Middle East war, often known as the "Six Day War." In that war, Israel fought against several Arab countries. This name is very important emotionally for the Arab world, especially for Palestinians.
In the 1967 war, Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai Peninsula back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Trump spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to arrange the ceasefire. This official also noted that Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff communicated with the Iranians using both direct and indirect methods. The White House has said that the bombing on Saturday helped persuade the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire, and that the Qatari government helped to arrange the deal. It is not clear what part Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, played in the discussions, even though he had previously stated online that he would not give up.
After Iran's air attack, authorities had to close the country's airspace to emergency flights for several hours. Israeli media reported that some flights had to circle over the Mediterranean Sea. Although Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, a few emergency flights had begun arriving and departing in the last few days. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar closed its airspace due to the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight-tracking data showed commercial planes flying in Qatari airspace once more, which suggested that Doha believed the danger to the energy-rich nation was over.
The conflict has caused many deaths and injuries. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been hurt. Israeli attacks on Iran have reportedly killed about 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists, a group in Washington that tracks casualties in Iran, including from the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests. This group stated that among those killed, 387 were civilians and 268 were security personnel. The U.S. has also evacuated around 250 American citizens and their immediate family members from Israel using government and private flights. It is thought that approximately 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
