On Monday, Thailand started to control its land borders, stopping tourists from going into Cambodia. This happened because both countries are taking actions against each other in their border disagreement.
The relationship between the two countries has become worse since an armed conflict on May 28th. A Cambodian soldier died in a small area that both countries say belongs to them. Even though they agreed to reduce the conflict, both sides are still taking or threatening actions that keep the situation tense.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Monday that Thailand will increase checks at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. She stated that only students, people needing medical care, and those buying essential items would be permitted to enter or leave Thailand.
She stated that the new rules were designed to stop people from going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it looked like all tourists would be prevented from entering.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia in five provinces. They are now only allowing people with essential needs to cross.
Because of a disagreement about the border, Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services. They have also blocked electricity and fuel from coming into the country from Thailand. Before this, Cambodia received 30% of its gasoline and other fuel from Thailand.
Paetongtarn also said on Monday that Thailand will think about stopping exports that could help scam operations in Cambodia. They will also work with other countries and international groups to stop cybercrime coming from Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took action to stop online scams in Myanmar by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to border towns where these scams were operating.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a main place for online scam operations. In these operations, workers trick people online with fake romantic stories, false investment offers, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has faced criticism for her mild view on Cambodia, particularly from right-wing nationalists who have always been against her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, who is the Cambodian Senate President and former prime minister, was leaked. This made many people angry and led to calls for Paetongtarn to resign.
Critics said she tried to please Hun Sen, who is a long-time friend of her father. They thought this made Thailand look weak because she called a Thai army commander in the disputed border area "an opponent." Because of this, several nationalist groups are planning a protest this week, asking for her to resign.
